Showa Society

Japanese: 昭和会 - しょうわかい

A small faction in the House of Representatives formed by defectors from the Rikken Seiyukai Party. When the Okada Keisuke Cabinet was formed in July 1934, the Seiyukai Party refused to join the Cabinet in protest against its bureaucratic-centered approach, expelling three members who negotiated to join the Cabinet: Tokonami Takejiro (Minister of Communications), Yamazaki Tatsunosuke (Minister of Agriculture), and Uchida Shinya (Minister of Railways). In May 1935, they also expelled Mochizuki Keisuke and Mizuno Rentaro, who had joined the newly established Cabinet Council. Tokonami and others took this opportunity to plan the founding of a new party, which stalled temporarily with Tokonami's death (September 1935), but as the 68th Diet approached and the mood for dissolution grew, on December 23, 18 expelled and defecting members of the Seiyukai Party, led by Mochizuki, formed the Showa Party, and by January 1936, the number of members had reached 25.

立憲政友会からの離脱者が組織した衆議院の小会派。1934年7月岡田啓介内閣成立当時，政友会は同内閣の官僚中心の組閣ぶりに反発して入閣を拒絶，入閣交渉に応じた床次（とこなみ）竹二郎(逓相)，山崎達之輔(農相)，内田信也(鉄道相)の3名を除名，さらに35年5月には新設の内閣審議会に参加した望月圭介，水野錬太郎をも除名した。床次らはこれを機に新党樹立を策し，床次の死(35年9月)で一時停滞したものの，第68議会をむかえ解散気運が高まるなかで，12月23日望月らを中心に政友会からの除名者･脱党者18名が昭和会を結成，36年1月には所属議員25名に達した。
