It is a member of the Nile Plover family in the Charadriiformes order. It is also called the Crocodile Plover. Total length 22 cm. Its head and back are black, with a long white brow line. Its flight feathers are black, and the rest of its wings are gray-blue. Its tail is black, with a white stripe at the tip. Its thorax and abdomen are yellowish-brown, with a black stripe extending from its shoulders across its chest. Its legs are black. It is well known as a bird that is not afraid of humans. It is also famous for an article by the Greek historian Herodotus, in which it is said to enter the mouths of crocodiles to remove pieces of meat or parasites that are left between their teeth, but this feeding has not actually been seen. However, it does land on the backs of crocodiles and pick up parasites from their skin. It is found in the Nile River basin, the area from Sudan to Senegal, and from Uganda to Angola.
