Born: September 11, 1723 (Baptized): Hamburg Died: July 25, 1790. Magdeburg. An educational reformer during the German Enlightenment. Influenced by J.-J. Rousseau, J. Locke, and C. Wolf. He initially served as a professor of theology in Denmark, but was driven from the pulpit due to his enlightened writings, and joined the educational reform movement in 1768. Taking a philanthropic stance, he founded the "School of Philanthropy" in Dessau. He advocated a realistic educational method, and argued for the introduction of nature studies, physical education, and handicrafts into school education. He also placed importance on the emotional education of children. His works include Ausgewählte Schriften (1880), edited by H. Goering.
