Jigokudani [Hot Spring] - Jigokudani

Japanese: 地獄谷[温泉] - じごくだに
Jigokudani [Hot Spring] - Jigokudani
Located at an altitude of 2,300m on the side of Mt. Tateyama in Toyama Prefecture, this hot spring is the highest in Japan. As Murododaira, 1km south, was the center of Tateyama worship, this area, spewing out sulfurous gas and steam, has been called Jigokudani (Hell Valley). The hot spring was opened in 1948, and in 1971 the Tateyama-Kurobe Alpine Route was opened, making it accessible from Omachi City on the Nagano side. It is a 55-minute bus ride from Bijodaira Station on the Toyama Chiho Railway's Tateyama Line, and a 30-minute walk from Murodo. There are four inns (closed in winter). Acidic hydrogen sulfide spring, 72°C.

Jigokudani [Hell Valley [hot spring]]

This hot spring is located in Yamanouchi Town, Shimotakai District, northeastern Nagano Prefecture. It is located in the valley of the Yokoyu River, and the spring quality is a weak saline spring with a temperature of 60-90°C. A natural monument fountain tower spews hot water and steam 15-20m high from the riverbed. It is a 15-minute bus ride from Nagano Electric Railway Yudanaka Station to Kanbayashi Onsen, and then a 30-minute walk from the last stop. There is only one inn with an open-air bath, and the monkeys from Jigokudani Monkey Park, which are fed on the opposite bank, also come to bathe. [Tanizawa Akira]
