A drinking or eating contest in which participants compete over the amount of alcohol and food they can eat. Drinking contests are called toun or shusen, while eating contests are called otoshoku. Both are pastimes that can be said to be the product of peaceful and safe societies, but historically the oldest and most famous is the drinking contest held at Teishi-in by Emperor Uda on June 15, 911 (Engi 11). Kino Haseo's record of the day, Teishi-in Shiun-ki, is included in Honcho Monzui. After that, no such records can be found for a long time, but it became popular during the Edo period.
