Kiyoshi Hasegawa

Printmaker. Born in Yokohama. After graduating from Azabu Junior High School in Tokyo, he studied drawing under Kuroda Seiki and oil painting under Okada Saburosuke and Fujishima Takeji. In 1913 (Taisho 2), he became a member of the literary magazine Kamen and began publishing original prints. At the end of 1913, he left for America, and the following spring traveled to Paris. He revived the copperplate printing technique manière noir (mezzotint), and added his own unique modern expression to it. In 1951, he became a member of the Salon d'Automne's printmaking department (and in 1948, a member of the painting department), as well as a member of the Shunyo-kai and a founding member of the Japan Print Association. In 1935 (Showa 10), he received the Legion of Honor, and then the gold medal at the Paris World Exposition. In 1989, he became a correspondent at the French Academy of Arts, and in 1986, he was awarded the French Order of Culture. A major retrospective exhibition of his work was held at the National Museum of Modern Art, Kyoto in 1980, but he passed away at his home in Paris on December 13 of the same year.

版画家。横浜市生まれ。東京の麻布(あざぶ)中学校を卒業後、黒田清輝(せいき)に素描を、岡田三郎助(さぶろうすけ)、藤島武二(たけじ)に油絵を学ぶ。1913年（大正2）から文芸雑誌『仮面』の同人となって創作版画を発表。18年末アメリカへ出発し、翌春パリへ渡る。銅版画技法マニエール・ノワール（メゾチント）を復活させ、さらに独自の近代的表現を加える。26年サロン・ドートンヌ版画部会員（48年には絵画部会員）のほか、春陽会会員、日本版画協会創立会員となる。35年（昭和10）レジオン・ドヌール勲章、ついでパリ万国博覧会で金賞牌(はい)を受ける。64年フランス芸術院コレスポンダン会員、66年フランス文化勲章受章。80年京都国立近代美術館で大回顧展が開かれたが、同年12月13日パリの自宅で没した。
