Kyuzo Hasegawa

A painter from the Momoyama period. The eldest son of Hasegawa Tohaku. His Buddhist name was Dojun. Some art histories from the Edo period state that Kyuzo was the common name of Hasegawa Nobuharu (Tohaku in his younger days), but this is incorrect. His paintings were more elegant than his father's, and his talent is said to have been outstanding even among the Hasegawa school, but he died at the age of 26, before his father. Around 1593, the Tohaku school painted a gold and green flower and tree painting (owned by Chishaku-in) at Shoun-ji Temple, which Toyotomi Hideyoshi built to commemorate the soul of his beloved son, Kakumatsu, and the most widely accepted theory is that the most elegant and delicate of these, the "Cherry Blossoms," was Kyuzo's last work. Other well-known works include the "Ohara Gokozu byobu" (owned by Tokyo National Museum) and the "Asahina Kusuzuri Hikizu Ema" (owned by Kiyomizu-dera Temple).

桃山時代の画家。長谷川等伯の長男。法名は道淳。江戸時代の画史には久蔵を長谷川信春(若いころの等伯)の俗称と記すものがあるが,これは誤り。画の清雅さは父に勝り,その才能は長谷川派中でも抜きん出ていたと伝えられるが,父に先んじて26歳で没した。文禄2(1593)年ごろ,等伯一派は,豊臣秀吉が愛児鶴松の菩提を弔うために建立した祥雲寺に,金碧の花木図障壁画(智積院蔵)を描いたが,そのうち最も優美で繊麗な「桜図」を久蔵の最後の仕事とする説が有力である。ほかに「大原御幸図屏風」(東京国立博物館蔵)や「朝比奈草摺曳図絵馬」(清水寺蔵)が知られる。
