Proteins with covalently bound sugar chains are called glycoproteins. In the past, proteins with a high sugar content were called mucoproteins and those with a low sugar content were called glycoproteins, but this distinction is no longer made. Glycoproteins are widely distributed throughout the living world. For example, almost all proteins in blood plasma, except for serum albumin, are glycoproteins, including immunoglobulins, complement, gonadotropic hormones, fibrinogen, and transferrin.

糖鎖を共有結合したタンパク質を糖タンパク質，あるいはグリコプロテインとよぶ。かつては，糖含量の多いものをムコタンパク質，少ないものを糖タンパク質とよんだが，現在ではこの区別はない。糖タンパク質は生物界に広く分布する。たとえば血漿（けつしよう）のタンパク質は，血清アルブミン以外のものはほとんどすべて糖タンパク質であり，その中には免疫グロブリン，補体，生殖腺刺激ホルモン，フィブリノーゲン，トランスフェリンなどが含まれる。
