A city in eastern Saitama prefecture. It was incorporated as a city in 1972. It is located on a plateau on both sides of the Moto-Arakawa River, and is known for its rice, wheat, vegetables, and Saitama pears. The Tohoku Main Line runs through the city. Since the 1960s, there has been a remarkable influx of housing and factories, and in 1986, the city's comprehensive development plan was issued, leading to redevelopment of the area around the station and improvements to the living environment. 埼玉県東部の市。1972年市制。元荒川両岸の台地上にあり,米麦,野菜のほか,埼玉ナシを特産。東北本線が通じる。1960年代から住宅や工場の進出が著しく,また1986年に出された市の総合振興計画により駅前再開発や居住環境整備が進められている。関山貝塚など縄文(じょうもん)前期の遺跡が多い。27.28km2。6万3309人(2010)。
