A strait between the southern coast of Victoria in southern Australia and Tasmania. It averages 240 km wide and is 60-100 m deep. It was formed when land that once connected the mainland to Tasmania sank due to marine transgression after the ice age. Flinders Island and King Island are remnants of the former land. There are oil fields off the coast of Gippsland at the eastern end, and crude oil and natural gas have been extracted from the seabed (Tertiary layers) since the 1960s. The crude oil reserves are 280 million kiloliters. Crude oil production (about 24 million kiloliters) accounts for about two-thirds of Australia's crude oil consumption. In 1798, explorers G. Bass and M. Flinders confirmed that it was a strait (and that Tasmania was an island). [Tatsuya Taniuchi] Source: Shogakukan Encyclopedia Nipponica About Encyclopedia Nipponica Information | Legend |
