In the early morning of June 30, 1908, a huge meteorite fell in the upper reaches of the Podkamennaya Tunguska River, a tributary of the Yenisei River, in central Siberia, Soviet Union (now Russia). A large fireball was observed over a wide area of over 1,000 km in diameter, and vibrations from the explosion were recorded in various parts of Europe, thousands of km away. For a while afterwards, noctilucent clouds were seen in the high latitudes of the Northern Hemisphere due to tiny particles floating in the upper atmosphere. Despite this major incident, the first full-scale investigation was carried out in 1921, when the Academy of Sciences of the Soviet Union sent an expedition led by LAKulik.

1908年6月30日早朝，ソ連邦(現，ロシア)シベリア中部，エニセイ川の支流ポドカメンナヤ･ツングースカ川の上流地方に巨大な隕石が落下した。直径1000kmあまりの広範囲で大火球が目撃され，大爆発による振動は数千kmはなれたヨーロッパ各地でも記録された。その後，しばらくは上層大気中にただよう微塵のため北半球高緯度地方では夜光雲が見られたという。このような大事件にもかかわらず本格的な調査がはじめて行われたのは1921年で，ソビエト連邦科学アカデミーはクーリクL.A.Kulikを隊長とする探検隊を送った。
