〘名〙 (moment)⸨モメント⸩① 非常に短い時間。瞬間。刹那(せつな)。※二人女房(1891‐92)〈尾崎紅葉〉上「其瞬間(モオメント)に瞥見したばかり」② 契機。きっかけ。※敗北の文学(1929)〈宮本顕治〉三「氏の全貌を語る上に、それは、一つのモメントを提供するに過ぎない」③ 要素。※映画時代(1930)〈寺田寅彦〉「俳句には矢張実に巧みに『声の影法師』を取り入れた実例が多い。例えば〈略〉『物うりの尻声高く名乗すて』は喜劇中のモーメントである」④ ある点Pにおけるベクトル量と原点からP点に向かう位置ベクトルとのベクトル積を、ベクトル量の原点のまわりのモーメントという。ベクトル量が力のときは、力のモーメントといい、原点のまわりのトルクの大きさになる。⑤ 一対の正負の電荷があるとき、負の電荷から正の電荷に向かう位置ベクトルと電荷量の積を電気双極子モーメントという。
