A bird of the order Passeriformes, family Muscicapidae, subfamily Muscicapinae. It breeds in the Tohoku region of Japan and winters in the Kanto and Tokai regions. There is also another population that breeds in the Liaodong Bay coastal region of China and winters in the Yangtze River basin. In Japan, it was first confirmed to breed in Miyagi Prefecture in 1935 (Showa 10), but disappeared a few years later, and was rediscovered in Aomori Prefecture in 1972 (Showa 47), and Akita Prefecture the following year. It is about 13 cm long. Its upper body is brown with black vertical stripes, and its underside is white. It prefers wetlands with dense reeds, silver grass, and platypus, and builds nests on grass stalks near the ground and lays 5 to 6 eggs. It has a unique chirping flight during the breeding season. It mainly eats insects that live on the grass. It is designated as a special bird.

鳥綱スズメ目ヒタキ科ウグイス亜科の鳥。日本の東北地方で繁殖し、関東、東海地方で越冬する。また、中国の遼東(りょうとう)湾沿岸地方で繁殖し、揚子江(ようすこう)流域で越冬する別の個体群もある。日本では1935年(昭和10)宮城県で初めて繁殖が確認されたが数年後に消滅し、1972年(昭和47)青森県、翌年秋田県で再発見された。全長約13センチメートル。上面は褐色で黒い縦斑(じゅうはん)があり、下面は白い。アシ、ススキ、ケカモノハシなどの密生する湿地を好み、地上近くの草の茎に巣をつくり、5~6卵を産む。繁殖期には、独特のさえずり飛翔(ひしょう)をする。草につく昆虫をおもに食べる。特殊鳥類に指定されている。
