… The impact of Japanese performance activities in the 1960s was immeasurable, and Terayama Shuji was one of the artists who utilized that legacy in theater and film. In the 1970s, Japanese performance activities were generally lackluster, except for the Butoh of Tanaka Min and others. However, in 1984, Nam June Paik (1932- ) and Joseph Beuys (both members of Fluxus), as well as Laurie Anderson (1947- ) of the younger generation, came to Japan, and the performance boom began to reignite, and new performances making full use of electronic technology such as video and computers were attempted. In a situation where electronic technology is surrounding the physical environment and physical one-timeness and chance are in danger of being turned into a program, it remains to be seen whether the performances of the 1980s can revitalize such one-timeness while using electronic technology. …

When a special screening of their short documentary films was held at the National Film Theatre, where Karel Reisz was then in charge of programming, Anderson named the program "Free Cinema," which was the beginning of the name and the movement. …
