It is the official language of Afghanistan, spoken by the Patan people (Afghans) who live in eastern Afghanistan and northern Pakistan. It is also called Pashto, Pahto, Pushto, and Afghan. It has about 15 million speakers. It belongs to the Iranian branch of the Indo-European language family, and retains the ancient characteristics of the Iranian branch, but is significantly different from Persian, being heavily influenced by Indic languages ​​and containing many loanwords from Arabic and Persian. It is written in a type of Arabic script. It is divided into two dialect groups, northern and southern.
