Songs praising Hindu gods, sung in temples and religious gatherings in North India. The name comes from a Sanskrit word meaning "to share," and originally the music was meant to be sung by oneself, rather than enjoyed by listening to others sing it. When classical musicians perform songs in the Hindustani style, they are classified as light classical, and are often performed as the closing theme of a concert. Instrumental musicians sometimes vary the theme of relatively popular bhajan melodies. Recently, arrangements in the style of film songs (theme songs and insert songs in Indian films) have become widely available on cassette tapes.

北インドの寺院や宗教的な集いで歌われる，ヒンドゥー教の神を讃える内容をもった歌。名称はサンスクリット語の〈分け持つ〉という意味の語から来ており，本来，他人が歌うのを聴いて楽しむというより，自分で歌うことに意味のある音楽。古典音楽の演奏家がヒンドゥスターニー音楽の様式を使って演奏するものは，ライト・クラシカル（軽古典音楽）に分類され，しばしば演奏会のしめくくりに演奏される。器楽の演奏家が，比較的ポピュラーなバジャンの旋律を主題にして変奏することもある。最近ではフィルム・ソング（インド映画の主題歌および挿入歌）風にアレンジされたものがカセットテープによって大量に流通するようになった。
