A loose-fitting garment worn by both men and women as nightwear or loungewear. It consists of a waist-length jacket and trousers, and is made from cotton broadcloth, flannel, knitwear, pile fabric, silk, etc. Originally it referred to loose trousers worn by Indians and Persians, but was brought back to Europe from India by the British in the 1870s, and has been widely worn by the general public since the 20th century. Additionally, beach pajamas, which were popular as beach wear in the 1920s and 1930s, were a precursor to women's pants style being accepted as street wear.
