Polygala - Polygala

A perennial plant of the Polygalaceae family (APG classification: Polygalaceae). The stem branches from the base, crawls downwards, and ascends obliquely upwards, reaching a height of 10-30 cm. The leaves have short stalks, are alternate, 2-3 cm long, and glossy. Racemes emerge from the leaf axils from April to July, and several purple flowers bloom. There are five sepals, the inner two of which are petal-like, ovate, 5-7 mm long, and purple, but grow green after flowering. The petals are 6-7 mm long, fused at the bottom, and tufted at the tip. There are eight stamens, and the filaments are fused at the base. The capsule is flattened with wings on both sides. The seeds are elliptical, brown, and have white hairs and appendages. It grows on hills and is distributed from Hokkaido to Okinawa and China. Its name comes from the fact that its flower resembles that of a bush clover, but is smaller. In the past, it was called Waonji, and its roots were used for medicinal purposes.

ヒメハギ科（APG分類：ヒメハギ科）の多年草。茎は基部から分枝して下方は地をはい、上方は斜上し、高さ10～30センチメートル、葉は短い柄があって互生し、長さ2～3センチメートル、光沢がある。4～7月、葉腋(ようえき)から総状花序を出し、紫色を帯びた花を数個開く。萼片(がくへん)は5枚、内側の2枚は花弁状になり、卵形で長さ5～7ミリメートル、紫色であるが、花期後に成長して緑色になる。花弁は長さ6～7ミリメートル、下部は合生し、先は房状になる。雄しべは8本、花糸は基部で合生する。蒴果(さくか)は扁平(へんぺい)で両側に翼がある。種子は楕円(だえん)形で褐色、白毛および付属体がある。丘陵に生え、北海道から沖縄、および中国に分布する。名は、花形がハギに似ているが、より小さいことによる。古くは和遠志(わおんじ)と称し、根を薬用とした。
