A state on the Atlantic coast of the eastern United States. Abbreviated as Va. or VA. The state is divided into the coastal plain in the east and the Appalachian Mountains and their foothills in the west. The state is mainly agricultural, with potatoes, peanuts, corn, and wheat, as well as tobacco and apples, which are famous in the western foothills. There is also livestock farming of poultry, cattle, and sheep. Minerals include coal, lead, zinc, and titanium. There are many types of industry, which are scattered throughout the cities, but the main industries are tobacco manufacturing, textiles, shipbuilding, and chemicals. Jamestown Colony was founded in 1607. It was one of the 13 independent states. It joined the Union in 1788. It joined the South during the Civil War, and West Virginia seceded in 1862. 19% of the population is black (1990). It has produced eight presidents, including Washington. It is home to Arlington National Cemetery. The state capital is Richmond. Area is 102,279 km2. Population is 8,326,289 (2014).
