The first law in America to establish separation of church and state. It was passed by the Virginia State Assembly in January 1786. In Virginia, the Church of England was recognized as the official church throughout the colonial period, and after independence, the church was reorganized as the Protestant Episcopal Church and given a privileged status. The abolition of this system was demanded by non-conformist church members and rationalists, and in 1779, the Act of Religious Freedom, drafted by Thomas Jefferson, was submitted to the state assembly as part of legal reform.
