Bihor (mountain) (English spelling) Bihor

Bihor (mountain) (English spelling) Bihor

…The Southern Carpathians are made up of crystalline rocks and are divided into four mountain ranges: Bucegi, Fágáraš, Parungu and Retezat. All of them are around 2500m high and have glacial features. The centre of the Western Carpathians is the Bihor Mountains and the Apuseni Mountains. Limestone is widely distributed and karst topography is developed. …

From Transylvania

From a geographical point of view, the trapezoidal region surrounded by these three mountain ranges, called the Eastern, Southern and Western Carpathians respectively, looks like an isolated castle compared to the steppe-like region that stretches from southern Russia through the Danube Plain to the Great Hungarian Plain. Many of the mountains in the Eastern and Southern Carpathians are over 2000m high (the highest is Mount Moldoveanu in the Southern Carpathians at 2544m), while the mountains in the Western Carpathians are generally lower (the highest is Mount Bihor at 1849m), but Transylvania, embraced by these mountain ranges, can be said to be a large basin in itself. Moreover, within it, there are plateaus, hills, valleys and the central Transylvanian plain, creating a diverse landscape, with settlements scattered not only on the plains but also on highlands at around 1300m high.
