…Its origins lie in the Villarcallo area on the upper reaches of the Ebro River, which formed the eastern frontier of the Kingdom of Asturias and Leon and was a constant battlefield against the Al-Andalus armies invading along the river. For this reason, numerous fortresses, or castellas, were built as early as the 8th century, which came to characterize the landscape and eventually replaced the traditional name Bardulia. The inhabitants were mainly native mountain peoples who had been weakly influenced by the civilization of the former Roman Empire, and many were Basques. …
