…Otto I (936-973), Otto II (973-983), Otto III (983-1002) were the direct successors, followed by Henry II (1002-24), the great-grandson of Henry I, who was succeeded by the Salier dynasty after his death. The royal family's ancestor was Liudolf (d. 866), a powerful man in eastern Saxony, and is properly called the Liudolfinger. He established his power by defending his country against the Slavs and Danes, and his son Otto (d. 912) became Grand Duke of Saxony. …
