A Spanish political movement founded in October 1933 by José Antonio Primo de Rivera (1903-36). The word Falange comes from the Greek word phalanx, a dense formation of heavy infantry. The Falange saw the nation as a unit that would defend the unity of Spain and bring about a single destiny for all Spaniards, and its basic principles were: (1) the dissolution of all political parties, (2) the unification of the Spanish people beyond ethnic, linguistic, and cultural differences, (3) equality of all Spaniards in the labor market, (4) respect for the eternal value of humanity, (5) separation of church and state while respecting Christianity, and (6) the restoration of Spain's cultural and historical mission.
