Shozan

A haiku poet and Chinese poet of the mid-Edo period. His surname was Miyake. His real name was Yoshitaka. His other names included Ritsutei, Kissai, and Sorokyo. He was from Kyoto. He ran a pawnbroker's business, but he also studied Confucianism, Chinese poetry, and Chinese colloquialism, and when requested, lectured on calligraphy to nobles and samurai in the capital. His wife was the granddaughter of Mokusetsu, a disciple of Basho, and he became interested in haiku. He became a disciple of Souoku, and also became acquainted with Taigi and Buson, carving out his own unique haiku world. He died on April 14, 1211. He compiled "Haikai Kosen" and "Haikai Shinsen," and his haiku works were collected in "Koutei Kushu" and "Koutei Gasanshu." He wrote a copy of "Xiaoshan Shishu" (Collection of Poems) in Chinese poetry, and translated Chinese vernacular tales such as "Tsūzoku Suibodai Zenden" and "Tsūzoku Nyōsen-den," as well as the reading book "Tonoibumi."

江戸中期の俳人、漢詩人。姓は三宅(みやけ)。本名芳隆(よしたか)。別号葎亭(りつてい)、橘斎(きっさい)、滄浪居(そうろうきょ)など。京都の人。質屋を営んだが、儒学、漢詩、中国白話文（口語）などを学び、求められて都の公家(くげ)や武士に書を講じたという。妻が芭蕉(ばしょう)門下の木節(もくせつ)の孫にあたるところから俳諧(はいかい)に関心をもって、宋屋(そうおく)に入門、太祇(たいぎ)、蕪村(ぶそん)とも交わり、独自の俳境を開いた。享和(きょうわ)元年4月14日没。『俳諧古選』『俳諧新選』などを編纂(へんさん)、俳諧作品は『葎亭句集』『葎亭画讃(がさん)集』にまとめられている。漢詩には『嘯山詩集』（写本）があり、また中国白話の訳書『通俗酔菩提(すいぼだい)全伝』『通俗女仙伝』のほか、読本(よみほん)『宿直文(とのいぶみ)』の著がある。
