Shimazu Yasujiro

Japanese: 島津保次郎 - しまづやすじろう
Shimazu Yasujiro

Film director. Born in Tokyo. Studied at Seisoku English School. In 1920 (Taisho 9), he joined Osanai Kaoru's Shochiku Kinema Institute, and the following year made his directorial debut with Lonely People, becoming a leading director at Shochiku Kamata Film with Sunday and The House That Makes Tea (both 1924). In 1927 (Showa 2), he released The Hero of the Sea, and in 1931, Life Line ABC. His film Next Door Yae-chan (1934), which depicts the daily life of ordinary people in a bright and lively way, was acclaimed as Japan's first successful talkie. The box office success of Okoto and Sasuke (1935), a film adaptation of Tanizaki Junichiro's Shunkinsho, ushered in the Japanese film industry of the adaptation of pure literature into the film world. After making films like "Family Conference" (1936), "The Three Crows of the Engagement" and "Lights of Asakusa" (both 1937), and "Brother and His Sister" (1939), he moved to Toho, where his last work was "Everyday Battles" (1944). Many directors, including Gosho Heinosuke and Toyoda Shiro, emerged from his school.
