This building is located in the grounds of Todaiji Temple in Nara City and is used to give ordination to monks. When Ganjin came to Japan from the Tang Dynasty, he built a platform in front of the Great Buddha Hall of Todaiji Temple in 754, where he gave ordination to Emperor Shomu and 400 other people. He soon moved the platform to the west of the Great Buddha Hall and built a temple, marking the beginning of Kaidan-in. Later, in 822, he built the Enton Kaidan on Mount Hiei and began giving ordination to Tendai monks, but the temple continued to flourish. It later suffered multiple fires, and the current building was rebuilt by Eko of Edo Reiunji Temple in 1733. The "Standing Statues of the Four Heavenly Kings" (national treasure) are currently enshrined in the hall.
