A former town in Oita County, central Oita Prefecture. Located in the middle reaches of the Oita River, the town has a remarkable development of river terraces. Rice is the main crop, but greenhouse horticulture is also practiced. In recent years, urbanization has progressed. The Yufu River, a tributary, is famous for its beautiful valleys. The central settlement is Mukaihara, through which the Kyudai Main Line passes. In October 2005, the town merged with Shonai Town and Yufuin Town in Oita County to become a city, Yufu City. 51.10 km2 . Population: 15,190 (2003). 大分県中部,大分郡の旧町。大分川中流にあり,河岸段丘の発達が著しい。米作を中心として施設園芸も行う。近年,都市化が進む。支流の由布川は渓谷美で有名。中心集落は向原(むかいのはる)で久大本線が通じる。2005年10月,大分郡庄内町,湯布院町と合併し市制,由布市となる。51.10km2。1万5190人(2003)。
