The White Nile, which originates in Lake Victoria in Uganda and is a collection of rivers flowing from the mountainous region near the southern border, flows northward through the center of the country, and merges with the Blue Nile, which originates in the Ethiopian plateau, in the capital Khartoum, and with the Atbara River in Atbara, forming a single Nile river that flows into Egypt. The northern desert area, called the Nubian Desert, is a rocky wasteland with an annual rainfall of less than 100 mm.
