A colorless crystal with insecticidal properties obtained from the roots of derris and coube plants native to tropical regions, such as Lonchocarpus spp. It is practically insoluble in water, but dissolves easily in acetone and chloroform. Indigenous peoples of the Malay Peninsula and South America used it as a poison added to water to catch fish. As a botanical insecticide, it is used especially against monkey beetles and cucumber flies. It is used as derris powder and derris emulsion. Its toxic effect on living organisms comes from its inhibition of oxidative phosphorylation in mitochondria, and it is also widely used as an inhibitor for research purposes.
