Ephippianthus sawadanus (F.Maek.) Ohwi
A small terrestrial orchid found rarely on the forest floor in cool temperate zones. The Japanese name is derived from Mt. Hakone, where it was first discovered. The rhizome is elongated and slender. Near the ground surface, it develops a single oval leaf, 1.5-3 cm long. Around June, it produces several sparse flowers at the end of a thin flower stalk, 8-15 cm long. The flowers are pale yellow-green and just under 1 cm in diameter. The lip has fine serrations from the center to the base. There are four waxy pollinia. The pillar has protrusions on both sides. A species endemic to Japan, distributed in the mountains on the Pacific side of Kanto and Kinki, mainly growing on the forest floor of beech zones.
