Japanese: 何をなすべきか - なにをなすべきか（英語表記）Chto delat’

This was a question that always disturbed the 19th-century Russian intelligentsia. In 1863, while in prison, Chernyshevsky wrote a novel of the same name. It portrayed the relationships, morals, and way of life of the "new people" through the three main characters, a woman named Béla Pavlovna, her first husband Lopukhov, and her second husband Kirsanov. It also featured a young man named Rakhmetov who lived a more radical life than the three main characters, living a simple life and training his mind and body so that he could withstand torture.

19世紀ロシアのインテリゲンチャにとってつねに心をさわがせた問いかけ。1863年チェルヌイシェフスキーは獄中で，同名の小説を書いた。これは〈新しい人たち〉の相互関係，道徳，生き方をベーラ･パブロブナという女性とその最初の夫ロプーホフ，第2の夫キルサーノフという3人を主人公として描いたものである。このほかに，彼らよりももっと徹底した生き方をするラフメートフという青年が描かれている。質素な生活をし，精神と肉体を鍛錬して拷問にも耐えられるようにする人物である。
