Kristiansand
Vest-Agder County is the capital of Vest-Agder County in the southern tip of Norway. It is a commercial port at the mouth of the Øtra River where it flows into the Skagerrak Strait. The city's name comes from the fact that it was founded in 1641 by King Christian IV of Denmark and Norway. The port plays a major role in maritime traffic between coastal cities in Northern Europe and North America, and is a central location on the railway line connecting Oslo and Stavanger, which opened in 1938. Various industries are also thriving in the city, including shipbuilding, textiles, metals (nickel, steel), wood processing, prefabricated housing, and the food industry. Historical buildings such as the Holy Trinity Cathedral (1618-28), which has Renaissance-style interior decoration, and Luther Cathedral (1885-87, rebuilt 1882-85), are well preserved. Population: 66,398 (1992 estimate).
