Joruri Gidayu-bushi. Historical piece. 12 acts. Written by Shiba Shiso. First performed in August 1801 (Kyowa 1). The following September, it was adapted into a kabuki play in Kyoto, and in November it was performed again at a theater in the east of Dotonbori in Osaka. It is a dramatization of the incident in 1590 (Tensho 18) when Iinuma Katsugoro killed his brother's enemy, Kato Kosuke. The 11th act, from "Amidaji" to "Waterfall," is famous. It is commonly known as "Tsurugi no Vengeance" or "Tsurugi Katsugoro." Iinuma Katsugoro is traveling with his wife Hatsuhana in pursuit of Sato Gosuke, who killed his brother Sanpei. His illness makes him lame, and when he reaches Hakone Amidaji Temple, Gosuke, who has changed his name to Takiguchi Kosuke, is lying in wait for him. He captures Katsugoro's mother, shackles her, and takes Hatsuhana away. Hatsuhana tries to kill Ueno but is killed in return, but her ghost returns to her husband, and Katsugoro's leg is healed by praying after being hit by the waterfall at Tonosawa, and he later successfully kills his enemy. This story has also been performed as a Kabuki play, and the famous line of Hatsuhana, who is pulling Katsugoro in a cart along the Hakone roads in autumn, is, "These are mountain areas, so snow falls even though there are maples."
