A battle between Ashikaga brothers Takauji and Tadayoshi and the forces of Nitta Yoshisada, who supported the Kenmu government, took place in the Hakone-Ashigara area in December 1335 (Kenmu 2). It was one of the main early battles of the Northern and Southern Courts civil war. In November of the same year, Takauji and Tadayoshi openly rebelled against the Kenmu government, so Emperor Godaigo ordered Yoshisada to pursue and kill Takauji and his men. Yoshisada led the government army eastward, defeating the Ashikaga side in Mikawa, and then defeating Tadayoshi at Tegoe-gawara in Suruga. Tadayoshi retreated and set up camp at Mizunomi in Hakone (near the mountains of Mishima City). Upon hearing of Tadayoshi's defeat, Takauji left Kamakura and, on December 11, took a detour along the Takenoshita Road and arrived at Misaka in Ashigara. There, he defeated a detachment of Yoshisada's army that was camped south of Ashigara Shrine, causing the main force of Yoshisada's army, which had been attacking Tadayoshi's forces at Mizunomi, to retreat.
