Blue clover

Japanese: ブルークローバー - ぶるーくろーばー（英語表記）blue clover

A perennial or annual plant of the legume family. Native to the Himalayan region and East Africa. There is one species in one genus, and in Japan it has recently been cultivated for use in potted plants and rock gardens. It branches well, has thin stems, and grows densely along the ground. It is about 10 cm tall. The leaves consist of three leaflets similar to those of oxalis or clover. In April and May, beautiful deep blue butterfly-shaped flowers bloom solitary in the leaf axils, but they do not produce many flowers at one time. It is said to be native to cool regions, and is susceptible to withering and dying if frozen.

マメ科の多年草または一年草。ヒマラヤ地方および東アフリカ原産。1属1種で，日本では鉢植えやロックガーデン用として，近年栽培されるようになった。よく分枝して，茎は細く地をはうようにして密に茂る。草丈は約10cm。葉はオキザリス，またはクローバーによく似た3小葉からなる。4～5月ごろ，美しい真青色の蝶形花を葉腋（ようえき）に単生して咲かせるが，一度にそれほど多くの花はつけない。原産地は冷涼な地域であるといわれ，凍らせると枯死しやすい。
