Japanese: 赤平[市] - あかびら

A city in central Hokkaido. It was incorporated as a city in 1954. It is located in the lower reaches of the Sorachi River, a tributary of the Ishikari River, and in the northern part of the Ishikari coalfield. After the opening of the Nemuro Main Line in 1913, coal mining development progressed, but the last coal mine, Sumitomo Akabira Mine, closed in 1994, and the site of the mine is now a diversified business that includes floriculture. There are factories producing leather, lumber, and food products, and efforts are being made to attract businesses. The gently sloping land on the right bank of the Sorachi River produces wheat, beans, and potatoes. 129.88 ^km2 . Population: 12,637 (2010).

北海道中部の市。1954年市制。石狩川の支流空知川下流部，石狩炭田北部にあたる。1913年根室本線の開通以後，炭鉱開発が進んだが，最後の住友赤平鉱も1994年閉山し，同鉱跡では花卉(かき)栽培などの多角経営が行われている。皮革，木材，食料品などの工場があり，企業誘致も進められている。空知川右岸の緩傾斜地では，麦類，豆類，ジャガイモを産する。129.88km²。１万2637人（2010）。
