A representative Byzantine structure remaining in Istanbul, Turkey. Hagia Sophia means "Holy Wisdom." It was built by Emperor Constantine I (the Great) in 325 (dedicated in 360), but has since collapsed and been remodeled and expanded due to repeated fires and earthquakes. The existing remains are a unique brick and stone structure that combines a basilica style and a centralized plan, built by Emperor Justinian I (the Great) to a design by the 6th century architects and engineers Anthemios of Trareis and Isidorus of Miletus.
