Acapulco (English spelling)
Its official name is Acapulco de Juárez. It is a city in the southern part of Guerrero State in southern Mexico. It is the largest port city on the Pacific coast of the country, located about 300 km south-southwest of Mexico City, overlooking a deep semicircular bay surrounded by hills. During the Spanish colonial period, it prospered as a trading port connecting Mexico with the Philippines, China, and other countries. It is still a busy port of call for large ocean-going ships sailing between Panama and San Francisco. It is also the commercial center of the surrounding agricultural areas, shipping cotton, tobacco, cacao, sugar cane, corn, coffee, leather, lumber, and fruit. From May to November, it is hot and rainy, but from December to April, it is blessed with a mild and comfortable climate, and has developed into a seaside resort in recent years. Currently, it is equipped with luxurious hotels, villas, beaches, and entertainment facilities, and trolling can be enjoyed off the coast, making it Mexico's number one tourist and health resort. It is also called the "Mexican Riviera" and attracts many tourists from the United States and Europe. It is connected to Mexico City by a highway and has an international airport nearby. Population: 592,187 (1990 estimate).
