Fees - Yakuryo

Japanese:
Fees - Yakuryo

The Edo Shogunate's official salary. In order to reduce the economic burden on the Shogunate's vassals and to make it easier to promote talented people, it was paid to certain officials only while they were in office, in addition to their stipends. It was first implemented in 1666 (Kanbun 6), and a fixed amount was paid to about 40 official positions, regardless of the amount of stipend. It was abolished in 1682 (Tenwa 2), and recipients had their stipends increased. It was then revived again from 1689 (Genroku 2) to 1692, when a standard stipend was set for each position to reduce expenses, and those who did not reach that level were paid. For example, town magistrates (bugyo) with stipends of 3,000 koku or less were paid 700 straw bales. This system was later reformed again in 1723 (Kyoho 8) with the establishment of the ashidaka system, and it came to be used in conjunction with ashidaka.
