English literature scholar and essayist. Born in Tosa Province (Kochi Prefecture). His real name was Katsuya. He studied at Meiji Gakuin, where he became acquainted with Shimazaki Toson, Togawa Shukotsu, Hirata Tokuboku and others, and became a member of Bungakukai. He published poems, novels, critiques and more, but his greatest achievement was translating and introducing the works of Maupassant, Balzac, Gorky and Chekhov. He also came close to the Modern Thoughts of Osugi Sakae and others, and influenced the socialist movement of the Taisho period. His books include Meiji Literary World Review (1936) and Meiji Literary World People (1942).
