A city in the western part of Fukuoka Prefecture, bordering Fukuoka City to the south. It was incorporated as a city in 1972. The Kagoshima Main Line runs through the area. During World War II, a large munitions factory was established here, and after the war it developed rapidly as a US military base and a Self-Defense Force base. In recent years, it has become a commuter town for Fukuoka City. There are many important archaeological remains, such as the Sugu ruins. 福岡県西部，福岡市の南に接する市。1972年市制。鹿児島本線が通じる。第２次大戦中大軍需工場が設置され，戦後米軍基地，自衛隊基地となって急速に発展，近年は福岡市のベッドタウン化が著しい。須玖(すぐ)遺跡など考古学上重要な遺跡が多い。九州大学学際大学院がある。14.15km2。10万6780人（2010）。
