A city in the western part of Fukuoka Prefecture, bordering Fukuoka City to the south. It was incorporated as a city in 1972. The Kagoshima Main Line runs through the area. During World War II, a large munitions factory was established here, and after the war it developed rapidly as a US military base and a Self-Defense Force base. In recent years, it has become a commuter town for Fukuoka City. There are many important archaeological remains, such as the Sugu ruins.
