...The existence of the crater has been known for a long time among the Indians of this region, but it was not until the end of the 19th century that it began to attract the attention of white people. A large amount of iron meteorite fragments were found around the crater, and the absence of volcanic material in the vicinity led to the speculation that it was caused by the fall of a large meteorite. In particular, at the beginning of the 20th century, miner DM Barringer bought the land around the crater, conducted enthusiastic research, and asserted that it was a meteorite. This led to it being called the Barringer Meteor Crater, but it is often simply called the Arizona Meteor Crater, or the Canyon Diablo Meteor Crater after the name of the nearby canyon.
