A slang term for the inhabitants of the Mariana Islands in Micronesia. Their language is a member of the Indonesian branch of the Austronesian family. They are thought to have originally been close to the people of the Western Caroline Islands, but since ancient times they have intermarried with the Spanish and Filipinos, and there are hardly any pure-blooded people left today. They were Catholicized early on, and as a result of the dramatic population decline in the 18th century, their unique religion and social organization were completely destroyed, and their manners and customs were Westernized. They once had a three-tiered social hierarchy and a matrilineal clan organization, and are said to have operated boats called matas with outriggers and triangular matting sails. They are famous for their colonnaded megalithic ruins called latte. Source: Encyclopaedia Britannica Concise Encyclopedia About Encyclopaedia Britannica Concise Encyclopedia Information |
