Allen, RS - Allen

...His columns were distributed and reprinted by a syndicate in 165 newspapers across the United States, and he became a nationally famous columnist. In the 1930s, political columns and "political debate" columnists became popular. W. Lippman, who began working in the Herald Tribune in 1931, was a representative columnist who provided hard-line political commentary. Drew Pearson and Robert S. Allen were famous columnists who provided inside information (with titles such as "The Washington Merry-Go-Round" and "News behind the News"), and they were famous for a period after World War II until they gave up their role to television commentators. The need for explanation due to the complexity of events, routine news articles, and somewhat abstract and distant editorials attracted readers to columns that expressed personal feelings and were not afraid to be opinionated.
