…(2) Interpretive sociology is a sociology of regulation that takes a subjective standpoint, and is social nominalist, antipositivist, voluntarist, and individualistic. Its core is phenomenological sociology, led by Alfred Schutz (1899-1959), which seeks to understand the semantic structure of the everyday life world, and ethnomethodology, which combines the ideas of phenomenological sociology with the methods of sociolinguistics to approach the normative rules and rationality structures of the everyday world. The common theoretical standpoints of both are that they are involved in social phenomena not as observers but as participants, that they regard people's actions and interactions as a constant process of interpreting meaning, and that they approach this in an interpretive way, and that they focus on the significance and validity structures of pre-theoretical common sense, point out the pluralism of the composition of social reality, and develop the theory of the so-called "plural reality." …
