...In particular, the military, inspired by the Egyptian Revolution of 1952 and the establishment of the prestige of Egyptian President Nasser in the Second Arab-Israeli War of 1956, became increasingly keen to break away from British rule through a coup d'état. In 1958, the contradictions under the monarchy erupted, leading to a revolution to overthrow the monarchy and establish a republic, which resulted in General 'Abd al-Karīm Qāsim taking power. Qāsim established a system based on socialism, supported by the Communist Party, which had the power to mobilize the masses, and Arab nationalist forces, which had influence within the military.
