A river in southwestern Iran. It originates from Mount Zard-e-Kuh in the central Zagros Mountains, meanders through the plains of Khuzestan, and flows into the Persian Gulf after joining the Shatt al-Arab at Khorramshahr. It is 850 km long. It is the only navigable river in Iran, and can be navigated upstream from Ahwaz to Bande Khir. In 1888, the British firm of Lynch & Co. acquired navigation rights, and steamships began to operate directly from the Persian Gulf. In the 20th century, the importance of the river as a transportation route increased with the start of oil drilling at Masjed-e Suleyman and other places, and the port of Khorramshahr was built.
