Training ship - Renshusen

A ship used by schools that train maritime personnel, such as mercantile marine universities, maritime universities, maritime technical colleges, fisheries universities, fisheries high schools, Japan Coast Guard Academy, Japan Coast Guard School, or the fisheries and marine departments of universities, for the purpose of providing practical training for students for maritime work. There are various types and sizes of ships. The most representative of these are the training ships belonging to the Ministry of Land, Infrastructure, Transport and Tourism's Nautical Training Institute. As of January 2001, the training ships at the institute are Nippon Maru (sailing ship), Kaiwo Maru (sailing ship), Hokuto Maru (steam ship), Taisei Maru (steam ship), Ginga Maru (mechanized ship), and Seiun Maru (mechanized ship). The Nautical Training Institute was made an independent administrative institution under the Independent Administrative Institution Nautical Training Institute Act (promulgated December 22, 1999, and enacted January 6, 2001, Act No. 213). Prior to that, it had belonged to the Ministry of Transport for a long time, and when the government ministries and agencies were reorganized in January 2001, it came under the jurisdiction of the Ministry of Land, Infrastructure, Transport and Tourism, and the Ministry has remained the competent ministry ever since.

There are fishing training vessels owned by maritime universities and other university fisheries departments, which are used for training fishery science students in ship operation and fishing. There are also vessels for ship operation, marine research, and practical training at university maritime departments, most of which are large ocean-going vessels. In addition, there are also small training vessels with narrow navigation areas used as in-house training vessels, moored training vessels that do not sail, and land-based training vessels that are fixed to land, all of which serve the same purpose.

海上勤務者を養成する学校、すなわち商船大学、海洋大学、商船高等専門学校、水産大学、水産高等学校、海上保安大学校、海上保安学校、あるいは各大学水産学部および海洋学部などにおいて、学生のための海上勤務に必要な実習訓練を行うことを目的として使用する船舶。船種においてもその規模においても各種のものがある。そのうちもっとも代表的なものとして国土交通省航海訓練所に所属する航海練習船がある。2001年（平成13）1月現在、同所の航海練習船は、日本丸（帆船）、海王丸（帆船）、北斗丸（汽船）、大成丸（汽船）、銀河丸（機船）、青雲丸（機船）である。なお、航海訓練所は、独立行政法人航海訓練所法（1999年12月22日公布、2001年1月6日施行法律213号）により、独立行政法人化された。それ以前は、長らく運輸省に属し、2001年1月の省庁再編時には国土交通省の管轄とされ、以降も主務省は国土交通省となる。

　漁業練習船としては、海洋大学をはじめ大学水産学部がそれぞれ所有している、漁労科学生の操船と漁業の実習訓練のためのものがある。また大学海洋学部における操船と海洋調査および実習訓練のためのものがあり、これらは大部分が航洋船としての大型のものが多い。さらに、学内練習船として航行区域も狭い小型練習船や、航海をしない係留練習船、あるいは陸上に固定してある陸上練習船なども同じ目的のものとして存在する。
