Gekkaika

Japanese: 孽海花 - げっかいか

The first full-length novel of the late Qing and Republic of China. Episodes 1 to 6 were written by Jin Songcen. Zeng Pu took over and published it intermittently from 1905 to 1930 (the 31st year of the Guangxu era to the 19th year of the Republic of China). There are 35 episodes in total, but it is still incomplete. Modeled after the famous late Qing courtesan Sai Jinhua, it is a Romanesque work that expands the setting to Europe, and it also depicts the inner workings of politics and academia, as well as the stirrings of the revolution, providing a complete picture of late Qing society, making it one of the masterpieces of late Qing novels. The title means "A Flower (Famous Courtesan) Blooming in the Sea of Trouble."

中国，清末･民国初の長編小説。第1～6回は金松岑（きんしようしん）の作。曾樸があとをうけて1905‐30年(光緒31‐民国19)に断続的に発表。全35回，未完。清末の名妓賽金花（さいきんか）をモデルに，舞台を欧州にまで広げたロマネスクを中心として，政界･学界の内幕や革命前夜の胎動などを並行して描き，清末社会の全体像を浮かびあがらせた，清末小説の傑作の一つ。書名は，〈孽海（わざわいのうみ）に咲く花(名妓)〉の意。
